Ring's Search Party: Amazon Built a Surveillance Network While You Were Looking for Your Dog

Ring's Search Party feature got a Super Bowl ad treatment: heartwarming story of a lost dog reunited with its owner thanks to crowdsourced camera footage. Cute, right? Until you read the leaked emails.
According to 404 Media, Ring founder Jamie Siminoff sent an internal memo in October 2024 outlining much grander ambitions for Search Party — well beyond finding Fido. Despite public denials about facial recognition, the leaked email suggests Ring is building something much more expansive: a distributed AI surveillance network running on millions of consumer-owned cameras.
This is how surveillance creep works. You start with "find my lost dog." You end up with AI-powered people tracking across entire neighborhoods.
What Search Party Actually Is
Search Party launched as a feature that lets Ring camera owners search other people's camera footage for a specific object — like a missing pet. You describe what you're looking for, and Ring's AI scans participating neighbors' cameras to find matches.
The pitch: community safety, lost pet recovery, finding stolen packages. Voluntary participation. Wholesome stuff.
The reality: you're giving Ring (and by extension, Amazon) permission to run AI models on your camera footage to identify... well, anything they want to identify.
Right now, it's dogs and packages. The leaked email suggests Siminoff sees Search Party as a platform for much more.
The Leaked Email: What Siminoff Really Said
In the October 2024 internal memo, Siminoff reportedly described Search Party as having applications beyond lost pets. He didn't specify exactly what, but the implication is clear: if the AI can find a golden retriever, it can find a person. If it can identify a stolen Amazon package, it can identify a face.
When 404 Media asked Ring directly about facial recognition, the company issued a carefully worded denial: "We have no plans to add facial recognition to Search Party."
