South Korea's HBM4 Chokepoint — The Hidden Bottleneck in the AI Race
High-bandwidth memory 4 (HBM4) has become the critical bottleneck for next-gen AI accelerators — and South Korean chipmakers control the entire supply chain. This isn't just a technology story. It's a geopolitical one.

But manufacturing HBM4 is incredibly hard. It requires:
- Through-silicon vias (TSVs) — microscopic vertical connections through stacked chips
- Thermal management — Stacking DRAM generates heat; cooling is critical
- Yield management — One bad layer ruins the entire stack
Only three companies in the world can do this reliably: SK hynix, Samsung, and Micron. And Micron is years behind the Koreans.

South Korea's Dominance
SK hynix supplies HBM to Nvidia, AMD, and Google. Samsung supplies its own Exynos chips and is competing for Nvidia contracts. Between them, they control over 90% of the global HBM market.
This isn't by accident. South Korea has spent decades building vertical integration in memory manufacturing:
- Material supply chains — Specialized substrates, adhesives, and thermal interface materials come from Korean suppliers
- Manufacturing expertise — Engineers who understand TSV fabrication and chip stacking are concentrated in Seoul and Incheon
- Capital investment — Samsung and SK hynix have spent billions on HBM fabs; competitors can't match that scale
The result: if you want to build cutting-edge AI chips, you're buying Korean memory. There's no alternative.
The Geopolitical Problem
This creates a strategic vulnerability. AI infrastructure is now critical national infrastructure — for defense, intelligence, economic competitiveness, and technological sovereignty.
But the US, China, and Europe are all dependent on South Korean memory suppliers. That's a single point of failure.
Consider:
- US export controls on AI chips to China depend on South Korean cooperation. If Seoul doesn't enforce HBM export restrictions, the controls fail.
- China's AI ambitions require HBM. They're trying to build domestic alternatives, but they're at least 3-5 years behind.
- European sovereignty in AI means nothing if every accelerator depends on Korean memory.
South Korea is playing this carefully. They're not restricting exports (yet), but they're aware of the leverage. HBM4 is a bargaining chip — literally.
Why Can't Others Catch Up?
Micron is the only non-Korean player with credible HBM capability. But they're behind:
- SK hynix is already shipping HBM3E (the current generation) at volume and has HBM4 in development
- Samsung is mass-producing HBM3E and targeting 2027 for HBM4
- Micron just started HBM3E shipments in late 2025 and is still ramping capacity
China is trying to build domestic HBM, but they're running into the same problems everyone else faces: yield. Stacking eight DRAM layers with microscopic TSVs is brutally difficult. One contamination event ruins an entire batch.
Without access to the latest EUV lithography equipment (which ASML in the Netherlands won't sell to China due to export controls), Chinese chipmakers can't match Korean yields.
What This Means For Your Business

- AI chip prices will stay high — Memory is 40-50% of the cost of advanced AI accelerators. Limited HBM supply keeps prices elevated.
